Clients: Potomac Hospital Woodbridge, Virginia

Working with: Miller Fine Art
Alexandria, Virginia

Project type:

Summary: Create 16 metal sculptures with the theme "The Potomac River"

Below: One of two Skipjack boats created using heat-treated copper, brass wire on a poplar wood base
14"W x 14" D x 26" H

I created sixteen metal sculptures for the Potomac Hospital's 180,000 sq ft expansion project in Woodbridge, Virginia. Most of the pieces were made of thick aluminum and the majority were approximately 3 x 4 feet. The theme of the project was the Potomac River, the hospital's namesake. The client specified two boat sculptures for the lobby (shown below left), the remaining sculptures were to represent the river and the animals and elements along it.

To provide more diversity in the theme, I designed the remaining fourteen sculptures to feature the different seasons' effect on the river, the elements along the river, as well as the different "moods' the Potomac has from day to day. The sculptures were displayed throughout the new building with special attention paid to the children's ward and the oncology center.

Three of the sculptures from the "Moods of the Potomac" series are shown below:

Below: "Dawn's Sun"
Material: Aluminum with Fine Gold Glaze and Painted Panel
44"W x 50"H x 12"D

Below: "Dancing Moon"
Material: Aluminum with Moonstone Glaze and Painted Panel
46"W x 48 "H x 12"D

Below: "Spring Rush "
Material: Aluminum with Copper Glaze and Painted Panel
48"W x 52"H x 14"D

(Below) These are just a few of the panels made for the hallways to show Autumn on the Potomac. One big challenge of the project was to create artwork at the same time as the hospital was being built, so the artwork plans were constantly changing. Typical factors that impacted the artwork plan were the large number of other elements a hospital wall must accomodate such as: wall mounted speakers, warning lights, flood lights, exit signs, switches, fire extinguishers, call-boxes, door bumpers, etc.

The wall pieces below were designed to be installed on a flat wall, but had to allow for possible changes. These are made in approximately 24" wide sections so if need be, they could be used on one of the gentle curving hallway walls and still meet the walkway protrusion safety standards. The views show the subtle twisting of the leaves to catch the light -and how they change color as you pass by. Look at the different views and see which leaves appear white in each view to better understand the effect of walking by them. This faceted effect was even stronger on the curved walls.
