Client: George Washington Masonic National Memorial

Project: Crest Re-design

Summary: To update the GWMNM 1910 crest design to incorporate additional Masonic symbolism while retaining the spirit of the original design.

Original 1910 crest design:

My first project with the George Washington Masonic National Memorial was to redesign the memorial's crest originally created in 1910. I felt that the original design missed an opportunity to incorporate masonic symbolism into the gold frame that surrounds the center coat-of-arms of the Washington family. To ease the transition from old to new, I chose to keep the same basic silhouette for the new design, but working with the GWMNM, I also integrated many important masonic symbols and several architectural elements from the GWMNM into the new crest.

(Below) My final sketch of the new crest design:

This new design was unveiled and featured during the GWMNM's 2010 Centennial Celebration.

Large versions of the design are sandblasted into the windows of the Great Masonic Hall and it is used on signs throughout the GWMNM interior and grounds.

The most impressive version of the 3-D crest is located in Grand Masonic Hall where a 48" tall cast version hangs. [For more about the bronze sculpture version, please click here]

The new crest was introduced to the general membership in the 2010 Annual Report.

The Christmas ornament
is one of my favorites.
